The special education eligibility category of Emotional Disturbance has always been elusive. The definition is vague and misunderstood by many, including the school psychologists that assess for it. Administrators can frequently become frustrated when students do not meet ED eligibility criteria which is often the gateway to more intensive mental health and educational interventions. After attending this presentation, participants will have a clear understanding of the Emotional Disturbance definition and learn to identify children who should be referred for an evaluation. Participants will also learn to differentiate between social maladjustment and emotional disturbance.
